Birthplace of Coca-Cola

On this corner in the year 1886, Dr. John Stith Pemberton first sold his new creation, a beverage named “Coca-Cola.” Pemberton, a local pharmacist, formulated the drink in his nearby laboratory and brought it here to Jacobs’ Pharmacy, where it was sold at the soda fountain for five cents a glass as a “patent medicine.”
The formula was later purchased by Asa Candler, who incorporated the Coca-Cola Company in 1892. Under Candler’s leadership, Coca-Cola was marketed aggressively and rapidly grew into one of the most popular and widely recognized brands in the world.
Today, Coca-Cola is sold in more than 200 countries. From these humble beginnings, it has become an enduring symbol of American culture.
