西多摩小学校 発足の地

青梅線 羽村駅から 北西に1.2km。羽村第一中学校の西方に 玉川神社（羽村市羽中4丁目1-16）がある。 神社の鳥居前に 羽村市教育委員会が建てた「西多摩小学校発足の地」碑がある。

明治10年（1877）, ここ玉川神社の境内に校舎を新築し「羽村学舎」と称した。
明治22年（1889） 羽村・五ノ神村・川崎村が合併して西多摩村となり「西多摩尋常高等小学校」と 称し, その12年後に 現 羽村一中の所在地に校舎を新築, 移転。
昭和6年（1931）「西多摩国民学校」, 昭和22年（1947）「西多摩小学校」と校名を変更。
昭和31年（1956）町制施行により羽村町が誕生。(1991年に 羽村市) 「羽村小学校」と校名変更。翌年 現在地(羽加美4-2)に移転し, 「羽村西小学校」となる。

西多摩小学校発足の地

　羽村の学校教育は, 明治6年(1873)禅林寺・禅福寺・一峰院などを仮校舎として始まりました。ニ年後に麻布《あざぶ》高須《たかす》塾《じゅく》から佐々《さっさ》蔚《しげる》先生を迎えて校舎新築の機運が 高まり, 中島与一右衛門を中心に, 学区取締役指田《さしだ》茂十郎《もじゅうろう》や戸長坂本《さかもと》海助《かいすけ》らの尽力によ って, この諏訪《すわ》の森を校地に選定しました。明治10年, 間口《まぐち》八間《はっけん》(約15ｍ), 奥行《おくゆき》四間《よんけん》の二階建校舎が完成し, 羽村と五ノ神村の生徒150人が学ぶようになりました。翌年1月8日に西多摩学校開校式が盛大に行われ, 近代教育の第一歩を踏み出しました。その後, 生徒数は増え続けて明治34年(1901)には500人に達したので, ここから天王台《てんのうだい》(現第一中学校所在地)に移されました。

Origins of Nishitama Elementary School

School education began in Hamura in Meiji 6 (1873), temporarily utilizing buildings at such places as Zenrinji temple, Zenpukuji temple and Ipponin temple. Two years later when Shigeru Sassa, a teacher from Azabu Takasu Private School, was invited to the district, there was great enthuslasm for erecting a new school building. This site, Suwa no Mori, was made avaitable through the good offices of Yoichiemon Nakajima, with the help of school District Director Mojuro Sashida and Deputy Village Chief Kaisuke Sakamoto. In Meiji 10 (1877) a two-story school building with a frontage of 8 ken (about 15 meters) and depth of 4 ken was constructed, and 150 pupils from Hamura village and Gonokamimura village began to receive instrution. On the 8th day of the following January a splendid opening ceremony was held for the Nishitama School, heralding the advent of the modern education system. Student numbers continued to increase, reaching 500 in Meiji 45 (1901), whereupon the school was moved to Tennodai (the present site of Daiichi Junior High School).
