Cluster of Drug Wholesalers Honcho

Location: Nihonbashi-Muromachi and Nihonbashi-Honcho Chuo City

Drug wholesalers handling medicinal plants and drugs lined up the rows of houses around Nihonbashi-Honcho 2, 3 chome (the present Nihonbashi-Muromachi 2, 3 chome and Nihonbashi-Honcho 2, 3 chome area) and Odenmacho from early Edo period (the beginning of 17 C.). Lots of Drug Wholesalers, let's say The MASUDA, selling "GOREIKO - Five Spiritual Ointment" which was popular in persons with sick eyes, IWASHI-ya and KONISHI-ya considered pioneers of the drug wholesalers, gathered together here. The drug wholesalers established the fellowship and made exclusive sales. Around Honcho 3 chome, lots of drug stores and wholesalers gathered together as the smell of medicine overpowered the area. This situation can be seen from the SENRYU - comic HAIKU "In 3 chome medicine plants are lined on the road" "In 3 chome non-smell shops are only three or four." In addition, fancy and elaborate signs were displayed outside the shops to differentiate and advertise the drugs. According to the shopping guidebook in 1824 "Edo-Kaimono Hitori Annai", about 40 shops in Honcho 3 chome, and almost 60 wholesalers in the whole Honcho were listed in the book. The Pharmaceutical Wholesalers' Association, the forerunner of current Tokyo Pharmaceutical Association, is founded by 62 pharmaceutical wholesalers in Tokyo, mainly in Nihonbashi in 1884. 136 businesses were listed in the cooperative's membership directory in 1922, 106 businesses of which had offices in the current Chuo City including Honcho and Hongokucho. In 1908, a grand festival was held to welcome the spirit of YAKUSO-JIN deity from Gojoten Jinja Shrine in Ueno, and in 1929, Yakuso Jinja Shrine was built on the roof of The Tokyo Pharmaceutical Association Office. In 2016, the shrine building was moved to the Fukutoku-no-Mori Forest in Nihonbashi Muromachi 2-chome, but the YAKUSO-JIN Festival is still held every October and attracts lots people. The Nihonbashi-Honcho area is still lined with the headquarters buildings of many pharmaceutical companies and retains a strong trace of the town of medicine that has existed since the Edo period.
