西京極陸上競技場に、駅伝開催100年の記念碑が設置された。駅伝100年碑は、三条大橋東詰にも設置された。

スタート地点である西京極陸上競技場ということになっているが、三条大橋の碑には三条大橋がスタートだったと記されていて、よくわからない。

日本初の駅伝は、1917（大正6）年、京都三条大橋から東京上野不忍池までを23区間にわけて開催された。2017（平成29）年4月29日はちょうど100年となる。今や国際的にも普及発展し、「EKIDEN」という語が世界共通の競技として認められるようになった。
駅伝発祥から100年を迎えたことを記念して、この地に記念碑を建立した。

Held in 19167 (Taisho 6), Japan's first ekiden, which was divided into 23 relay points, began at the Sanjo Ohashi Bridge in Kyoto and Finished at Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, Tokyo.
April 29, 2017 (Heisei 29) marks exactly 100 years since the first ekiden was held. In thattime through international advancement and popularization, the word ekidenhas come to be recognized aroud the world as a name for long distance relay races. This monument was erected at the starting point of ekiden in commemoration of the 100-year annicersary of the first race.
